Books and/vs Movies

It’s been a while since I last made a movie review. I am just in the mood because it made me happy that the best 2012 1^st quarter movie(s, for me) are both based on a book.

I consider myself a reader than a viewer. Yes I do watch a lot of movies, I love movies! But I am more fond of reading. Imagine how delighted I am whenever books turned to movie stories depicted a scene the way I imagined it to be.

The reason why I am very excited to do this shout out today is because I have seen both movies first before I have read the book. So you will understand that I bought the books because I saw the movie. Well it was a little different for The Hunger Games. It was all the hype that made me excited to watch it. I had a dream about it. I saw the trailer, it looks promising and all my nephews & niece talked about it all the time. The book originally was catered to young adults but a reader is a reader, there is no age difference in my opinion because I am still fond of reading children’s literature up to now.

I never intend to read The Hunger Games book but I am looking forward to watching it on screen. Last Saturday night, my nephew’s copy of the book was just lying around the house. They were discussing it because both boys (Josh & Jude) were able to watch it already. My niece Shaine & I are scheduled to watch it the next day. I just got curious (it was around 10-11pm), picked up the book, started browsing and the next thing I know, it was 2 am. I finished the book and I liked it so much (love would be a very strong word and I do not intend to be a book slut by saying “love love” a book, like would be a safe word to use). The movie didn’t disappoint either. Right after the movie, we headed to the bookstore and bought the box set (all 3 books and a couple of hard bound books that I really want to have a copy, yes I splurged again on books GUILTY!). I am now on book 2 (Catching Fire), I am not in a hurry to finish it because I am saving it for my very long non-stop flight to Vancouver this Thursday.

For The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I have seen the movie first (the Hollywood version) before I decided to read the rest of the Trilogy. I’ve been hearing a lot about the book years ago but because I thought it’d be full of sex and violence I said I’m never gonna like it. W & I watched the movie because he got curious, it was Daniel Craig (he likes him) and Rooney Mara received an Oscar nod for this movie. Off we go and surprisingly I liked it too (not and will never be a Craig fan). Right after the movie I bought all 3 books. I read the first one even though I’ve seen the movie already and was able to finish the next two last month. I downloaded the original Swedish movie versions but was not able to watch them all yet. Maybe I’ll have the time for it this holy week.

So there you go. It’s not really a movie review, it’s just a shout out. I decided not to give my opinions about the movies because I like them both and I think I got my money’s worth. W wants to watch the HG movie too. I just hope it’s still on theatres when he’s in town 2 weeks from now. I will go with him and watch it again for the second time.

Real Life Story

I am a movieholic, I love watching movies, old & new ones, mainstream or art films. I used to do reviews, I don’t know why I don’t do any of it anymore. Everybody’s busy I know, I am and have always been but I always have the time before to go watch the latest and give it my two cents.

Was it because movies are now available for downloads after a week or so that it was shown in theatres (thanks to torrents)? Or was it because movie tickets now costs a fortune? Or was it because I don’t have a movie buddy to go with? Or was it because there are just no more worth watching flicks anymore? Yes maybe to AB&C but never to D.

I was watching Something Borrowed last night on my very dependable iPod, not for Kate Hudson but because I really like Ginnifer Goodwin and that if I would associate myself to a movie actress I would love her to be in my circle. The roles she play – always an underdog – is something that I (as a viewer) feel for, something that all of us, at one point in our lives can relate to. I like how you would continually guess how the movie would end. Guess #1 is that she would end up with Jon Krasinski, that’s always the case in feel good movies, while you have your eye on someone who doesn’t like you the way you like him or her there will always be this other person who loves you the way you love the other and at the end of the day the happy ending is that you deserved to be the first choice so you’ll end up and you’ll realize that this person you do not adore at the beginning is your one true love (I may have confused you more but I know you get the drift, don’t you?). But I was wrong. Guess #2 is that the best friend Darcy (Kate H.) would be the best friend you wanted, she’ll let you have the guy. She’s selfish at the beginning but would truly be a “friend” in the end and you’ll live happily ever after with the guy (whom you love from the very start but you’re too afraid to let your feelings known that he ends up being the fiancé’ of your best friend). I won’t be writing how the movie ends it is best you watch it if you’re interested.

Why am I babbling about this movie? It is because this movie made me realize that my life lacks the story that is worth telling over and over again. I am blessed not to have encounter too many failures that would give me the chance to retell my story on how I rose from below. I do not have an interesting rag to riches, princess from pauper story. I have never been a damsel in distress, I have never been anybody’s meantime girl nor did I been a “one who got away” character. I have the most boring story. I wake up I do the day’s work and then I rest at night. I sound like I am complaining, I guess I am – a little but I am thankful for the things and people I have in my life right now. There are just times when you want to feel colourful and hyper from the events of the day. And because when the lights are out, my eyes are just closed, my mind adrift that after a couple of hours I have to open them up and resume with the routine that is MY LIFE.

Am I ranting? I’m not. Do I have a point? I don’t. So what do I want? Nothing. That’s it – I want nothing at least I believe I want nothing.

Harry Potter 7.1 @ Newport City Ultra Cinema

Watched HP7.1 last night with Dines, Jo & Bryan at Newport City Ultra Cinema. As an HP fan I wouldn’t miss the screening on its first week and might watch it again this weekend with the Boyps (inggit sya because of my stories).

It was my first time inside the Newport City Mall and Resorts World Casino. I can’t rave about the interior design of the mall/casino since I have already been to a number of Casinos in Macau, the Venetian included. Venetian Macau was even featured on National Geo so needless to say it is really awesome. Plus I was with my architect/designer friend so I believe Jo when he says that the design was bland.

The ultra Cinema’s lazy boy chairs and unlimited popcorn & soda concept is nice just like in the other cinemas like Gateway & Shangri-la. But something is not right with the Ultra Cinema screen, the distance of the screen from the first row was small that even when you stretch the chair into a bed (hehehe yes we were lounging, as in higa kung higa) it is still a little difficult watching.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 of two is amazing (all HP movies for me are amazing because they do not alter the story so much, it is presented the way it was narrated from the book). I love the part on how the story of the 3 brothers was depicted. And year by year I grow to love the Ron-Hermione love team. I can still hear Ron’s words in my ears when he asked Harry not to leave, he said that they won’t last 2 days without Hermione pausing then saying “don’t tell her I said that”. I was just a little disappointed that Dumbledore’s exposure on part 1 is too little. In the book even if he’s already a ghost (he was sort of just being talked about by the those who survived) he’s always there. I just wish I’ll see more of him on part 2.

In conclusion, HP3 Prisoner of Azkaban the movie is still my favourite. I really love that movie but all 7 are nice.

Valentines Day - with the all star cast it is like watching He's Not That Into you and Love Actually simultaneously... I love Director Marshall so I definitely believe that this one will be a killer (kilig).

Dear John - not really a feel good story especially the ending (not sure though if the book will really be followed, they do it all the time with Sparks books, they change the settings a lot) but I sort of like Channing Tatum *grin* hehehe

The Last Song - hate M. Cyrus but I love the story line plus it's another one from Nicholas Sparks.

Leap Year - funny girl Amy Adams with her big surprised eyes and wonderful charm? This will be a delight plus cutie Matthew Goode is in it :)

Watched Avatar (this time I didn't sleep on it, natapos ko talaga) with good friends Dines, Rhei (& sibs), Ingrid and Bert at Rockwell yesterday. The only thing I can say about it is that it is FANTASTIC.

I am really sooo looking forward to more good movies this year.

Same Old Same Old

The Covenant, Twilight and 50 Cent

I was able to watch the movie The Covenant last night, it was from 2006 and stars Steven Strait and Chace Crawford (sorry sila lang sikat eh) and I can’t help but imagine Twilight. There are no vampires in The Covenant but I’m pretty sure that the stunts of Twilight and the romance would look just the same. I bet Jacob Black of Twilight would be just like Caleb of The Covenant and I also think that Steven Strait would play a great Jacob cos he was really a great Caleb. Gets? Gulo noh? Anyway I don’t like the actor who will play Jacob on the film. It was Elliot from Cheaper by the Dozen 2 all grown up. I just don’t see him as Jacob every time I came across the JB character on the book. I really don’t like him crush ko pa naman si Jacob. Anyway going back to my observation, there are a lot of similarities between Twilight and the covenant . Here's one:

I was channel browsing a couple of nights ago and as usual nothing good is on during late weeknights. I settled for the Tyra Banks Show where the rapper 50 Cent was the guest. That’s how I found out that he’s not just a rapper who was responsible for In Da Club (the song you don’t get tired hearing especially when your clubbing) but also a man of substance. He seemed so intelligent, I mean really smart and deep. He gives his 2 cents (sometimes 50, hehehe corny) on a lot of things and you’ll feel that his image as a rap artist doesn’t say a lot about his character. I mean c’mon, all of you will agree that he don’t look that bright when he raps, right? Well he gained another fan in me except that I still don’t like his music.

Twilight

I am not a bit intrigued with Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series. I was with my friend Ziella at the book fair last month when she was blabbing non-stop about the book and the movie. Of course I am well aware of the books and the movie, being a really inquisitive person (in a good way) I keep myself abreast with what’s happening to the world, politics here at home & outside Pinas and most importantly with Hollywood… even about Comicon for that matter. It was because I cannot think of anything to ask from Zie for my birthday that I agreed to receive all 4 books. They were actually beginning to accumulate dust on my shelf. I was just bored last night that after dinner I grabbed the first book (Twilight) and began flipping through the pages. The next thing I know it was already 11 pm and I am almost done with the book. I tried to retire early last night then continued to finish it this morning. By 10 am (although I was up early I was at the Church first thing this morning) I was on the second book. I can’t say I liked it a lot, it was an easy read that is why I was able to finish it quickly. What’s really annoying with books turned into movies is that when you’re already aware as to who’s gonna play who, the characters you’ll imagine while reading are the actors & actresses who’ll starred in it. My mind was already filled with images of Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart and I don’t like them both. They both look really sickly skinny in my opinion but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and will declare my opinion once again after watching the film this November.But because of this book I have developed a little crush with the werewolf Jacob. I’m really a sucker for the underdogs. I don’t usually like the heroes, the lead roles, the protagonist. I am always after the bestfriend, the supporting actor, the “other” guy. The guys who ended up being killed or broken hearted in the end. Jacob would be a nice second name for my soon to be born nephew. I am gonna name my new nephew (he’ll be born this December) and you might be wondering why I am doing the naming stuff when I am not even the parent. I’ll tell about this story next time. For now all I can say is that I am the one in-charge and even the parents doesn’t have a say on this matter *bwahahaha*.

Going back to Twilight, I’ll have to agree with the raves that S. Meyer did a very creative job in prolonging the saga of the Cullens, the Quileute and Bella Swan. You may or may not even like the story with the teenage unbelievable underworld but it’s a good way to pass the time. My realization… I’d like to have a real life crush soon even if he’s a werewolf or a vampire.

Work, Concerts, Batman and other Disasters

I was reading an old email from a friend circa 2004, we mentioned there na nakakabobo ang magtrabaho. Well mas nakakabobo ang walang trabaho. I’m experiencing that lately. I am doing nothing here in the office, ang dame kong petiks na oras. Time of the year when kinda plantsado naman ang lahat. No rush projects, no urgent campaigns.

Di mo tuloy maiwasan ang mag muni muni which is not healthy.

On a brighter side of life… my bestfriend is back and another good thing is that she’ll be able to watch the Lifehouse concert with me and Ziella on Saturday.

Ayos na may isa nang bright sa buhay ko but more on the gloomy part…

Stereophonics is performing in Hong Kong this week and sa Japan din. Why oh why dun lang? Made me think why I was born here in the Philippines, kakainis (I know super shallow but who cares? blog ko to hehehe).

Batman movie (The Dark Knight) is actually good but not great… uber haba (2 hours & 35 minutes) nawawalan tuloy ng gana viewers – not all I guess but I’m counting myself and Ziella plus a few other friends. Okay na sana it’s just that the makers really prolonged it to the extent that even the climatic parts became dragging. Buti na lang Heath Ledger was there with his great performance (and his demise making it more kakakilabot) sige na nga magandang maganda na yung movie. So now those who have watched it already knows who the villain na for the next installment.

Wawa naman Ben2, problematic dame disasters tsk tsk di kase ako sinasama sa plano eh wala tuloy syang taga sapak sa mga nang aaway sa kanya.

Under The Weather

The song of the moment and it fits me well for I’m really a little under the weather.

I have seen the acclaimed The King and the Clown movie starring my beloved Lee Jun-ki. I have been intrigued for a while why this movie was very well praised and recommended and now I know why. It was a little “Farewell my Concubine”, “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “The Last Emperor” in a sort of way. All those great films mentioned combined and voila, The King and the Clown. Although each story is different from the other, they all showcased the beauty and richness of the Asian culture.

If you have the opportunity to watch this movie go ahead, this broke Taikugki’s record in the International scenario. This movie is now the holder of the best Korean film title, it received awards and recognition from China, Japan and the US. This was South Korea’s official entry to 2006’s foreign film category of the Oscar’s.

Enough said, Jun-ki is not even paying me enough to advertise his movie.

Across the Universe

I was informed that this was shown exclusively in Greenbelt/ Glorietta earlier this month but if you can get a copy (forgive me for saying this… even a pirated one for I’ve seen this in a pirated version that belongs to my bestfriend) GO GET ONE & WATCH IT.

If you love the Beatles, or the movie version of RENT and Moulin Rouge add this film to your favorites list.

And if you can’t get enough of the movie, a 31 track deluxe Soundtrack CD edition is available which featured all the songs by the cast from the movie (again I’m sorry for saying this… I downloaded my copy from Limewire… what can I do? It’s not available here in Pinas).

This is definitely the best movie (for me) of 1st quarter 2008 (even though this was originally released last year).

27 Dresses

Succeeded in doing its primary objective: to entertain the viewers

Those who loves Katherine Heigl would need not worry about what will be the outcome of this movie for her, and to those James Marsden fanatics (like me who’s a new convert – add Enchanted to the bill) will love him even more.

I personally love the end credits - it's very creative & funny.

I am chick flick sucker that is why this movie made me want to wish for my own cynical, impossible, unbeliever of marriage creep because later on (& because he met me) he’ll be transformed into this perfect groom meant only for me.

I already have 4 dresses in my closet, 2 more will be added this year… 21 more to go?

I hope not ;)

PS: I am not that happy, I am still depressed over the fact Heath is now a was.

Goodbye my Boys

He’s a cute boy with a lovely future – he acts really well. A wonder boy, a talented child star. He died at the age of 25 – possible reason was drug abuse & excessive alcohol intake.

He’s a promising Aussie bloke, loved by a lot in his brilliant Patrick performance opposite Julia in the adaptation of Shakespeare’s Taming the Shrew. He was blessed with a baby girl in 2006. What can go wrong, he’s just 28? Is it suicide?

They’re young and with bright futures yet they’re troubled and very tired of life.

May you both rest in peace Brad & Heath.

Jo, He's not the Boy who cried Wolf... he's BEOWULF

If you guys are thinking of watching Beowulf in cinemas you better opt for the IMAX experience. I watched it last night with Jo where a full length 3D animation was showcased. I love Angelina Jolie in this movie, although it is animated I still believe that it is Angie’s real body (as opposed to Ray Winstone’s bod in this flick hehehe – watch the movie first then search through yahoo or imdb on what Ray aka Beowulf looks like).

It is in a way dark and gory (why would it not be? Neil Gaiman wrote the screenplay) and Robert Zemeckis’ impressive creation will make you remember the Polar Express.

So take my word for it, if you want to watch it ready your P400 and watch it in IMAX, it is worth your money (in my case Joel’s money hehehe).

PS: thanks Jo for the “initial bday treat”, looking forward to the “babawi ka pa rin treat”.

Bourne Ultimatum

You really don't remember? I lost count how many times these lines were mentioned.

Have I named my fave movie of 2007 already? If not yet (I know I LOVE Transformers but this one outwitted it). Well this is it! I watched the first 2 intallments & they were both okay but this one is ultimately the best. I don't like Matt Damon that much but this movie made me like him for more than an hour (hehehe). And Bourne (David Webb) just won't die - he's always getting away & over & over. Watch it guys you'll enjoy it promise.

Recap

Reports week, Jenny & myself are buried with paper works but I’m not up to the task. Rainy days really makes me sad. All I want to do is stare at the window, sip hot coco but what I can only do today is sip hot coco & stare at my PC screen. It’s not that I hate my job (although it always sounds like I do hate it), I am really blessed to have this job, I have great colleagues and I have really learned a lot from my boss. There are just days like this when I’m not in the mood to do what I’m being paid for hehehe instead I am writing non-sense on this blog.

I had a hard time falling asleep last night (as predicted by Rovs but the reason was not what she said). I watched like 2 movies – both which I was not able to watch from the start. Full Monty was on Star Movies and another one with subtitles from the Hollywood channel. I got bored with the TV so I switched to the book I was finishing. I got bored with the book so I shifted to the photo albums. I browsed through my old albums and I can’t help but be proud of myself for my wonderful friends. I have a great group of friends, I am blessed and I thank God for them.

I wasn’t able to tell stories of my best friend Luchie’s vacation here last July. Apart from the Boracay trip that the two of us took we also watched Harry Potter 5 on IMAX, celebrated Yong’s 27th birthday and did some shopping (we met a couple of times in Makati). It was really short but it was nice. The Boracay trip was awesome. Day 1 was stormy, we arrived in a very wet Aklan. Locals said that it has been raining for days already, we arrived on a Friday and rain started pouring Tuesday so you could just imagine the frustration we both felt. We had a full body massage at the hotel that afternoon, took a walk at the beach, had dinner at a Thai restaurant, and raided Niq & Janice in their room at La Carmela de Boracay. We then went for a drink before heading back to our hotel. We watched a LOT of TV then finally slept around 2 am. I woke up early around 6 am and to my dismay, it is still raining outside :(. I went back to bed & woke up again around 8 am to my surprise! The sun is already shinning yippee! Luch & I strolled along D’Mall to buy pasalubongs & other Bora stuff. We hanged out at the beach, Chie went swimming for a while then we went to lunch with Niq & Janice at Aria. Food there is superb, I recommend their vegetarian pizza, it’s really great. After lunch we went sailing. We went to 3 different islands, snorkelled a bit and then went lastly to Island Cove. We swam, took pictures and head back to White Island. It was on our way back that one of the scariest things to have happened in my life “happened”. It was like our last day on earth experience. It began to rain again (heavy rains, you will cry ouch every time a drop which was huge falls on you), the sea was in rage and since we were sailing we have to be dependent on the wind to be able to maneuver the boat. Manong & his assistants were experts however you can say that they are nervous and really having a hard time making the boat turn around. We survived *whew*, we went back to the hotel still feeling a little shaky, the four of us had coffee then Niq & Ja went back to their hotel. Luchie & I head out to get tattoos. Luch got a tribal design while I had the Chinese character for the word “dream”. We then had a quiet dinner at The Hawaiian Barbeque, went back to the hotel, watched more TV to relax before going out again with Niq & Ja for drinks. We hanged out in Hey Jude bar where the DJ is an eye candy. Day 3 was bye bye day for us, we had breakfast at Café del Sol (I love their hot mocha), Luchie swam some more (notice that I am not really fond of swimming but I do love a lot of water activities) then we freshened up, packed our things & said our last goodbyes to Boracay.

Simpsons Movie – hilarious.

Simpsons fans got a good treat, the long wait (18 years) was over and it was worth it. I went to watch it with my pamangkins and we were all laughing hard holding our stomachs. I am not a die hard fan but I do watch the show whenever I catch them on cable. If you could take Homer’s humor I’m sure you’ll have a grand time watching the movie.

License to Wed… a feel good movie.

Not something that you should definitely watch but do watch it if you have the time & some money to spare. A good way to pass the time (I have a confession: I like Mandy Moore so I watch her movies – all of them). You'll be entertained.

Phrase (Praise) for...

Astig! I know this has been shown months ago or maybe last year (I’m not so sure anymore, my fault… how could I let a Leo movie pass me by?) but I had the chance to watch it on DVD recently. Thanks to Yong for lending me his uber linaw & hanep na DVD. This one really moved me to the edge of my seat (or bed hehehe). I’m adding it on the list of my favorite movies.

Unfortunately this one didn’t live up to my expectations, or might be because I am still mooning over Transformers. The IMAX experience didn’t help. There are a lot of scenes in the movie that would look great in 3D but what they did was concentrate the animation – all 20+ minutes of it in the end. The twin’s marvelous exit from Hogwarts (fireworks & everything) would have been a great part to show in 3D plus all scenes where brooms are concerned. As a Potter fan my favorite still by far is The Prisoner of Azkaban. I do hope that Yates would not disappoint us on the 6th & final installment of the movie (yes he’ll direct the movie version of Book 6 & 7 – goodluck).

More than really meets the eye. Do I need to say more?

I love him so much that I will forgive him for being really skinny hehehe. I’m pertaining to Adam, hehehe not the other skinny guy hehehe. Anyway Carter Webb is the 26 years old Seth Cohen. Love his humor, love his charisma, love everything about him. The movie is not something you’ll recommend to friends (as I told Jen, you didn’t miss anything if you didn’t get the chance to watch it) especially when they’re depressed.
